ATNA PEAKS

Meaning: Named in 1965 by Mountaineering Club of Alaska, because the “Peaks are at the edge of the Copper River drainage and the old indigenous name for that river was Atna.”

Volcanic Province: Wrangell Volcanic Arc
Location: Ahtna Nenn’ / East-Central Alaska, USA
E:61.748°N, 143.222°W
W: 61.749°N, 143.24°W

Type: Scientists believe it is severely eroded shield volcano
Age: Unclear, glacially carved 2.6 million years ago
Last Known Eruption: Between 5 million and 3.4 million years ago

Standing tall and proud within the Alaska Range, Atna Peaks cut a different figure compared to its fiery neighbors. Whether Atna Peaks is an eroded stratovolcano or shield volcano is inconclusive due to lack of research. Atna Peaks present as a broad, dome-shaped giant formed by countless lava flows over time, with two main peaks. Imagine a gentle giant, its slopes rising steadily, unlike the steeper peaks of other volcanoes.

While the exact timing of its fiery beginnings remains a subject of debate, geologists believe Atna Peaks’ volcanic activity started millions of years ago. It's estimated to be one of the oldest volcanoes within the Wrangell Volcanic Field. Throughout its long history, it has experienced periods of intense volcanic activity, spewing lava that steadily built its impressive form. Today, the peaks impose a summit elevation both exceeding 13,000 feet.

Despite its imposing size, Mount Atha is currently considered extinct. There haven't been any recorded eruptions in historical times. However, the mountain's history is marked by more than just lava flows. The relentless work of glaciers has carved its slopes, creating dramatic valleys and cirques – large, amphitheater-shaped depressions. These features add a unique touch to the majestic presence of Atna Peaks.
